Fantasy Football Part Two

I’ve gone and done it now. I’ve joined a fantasy football league at work. I enjoy the anonymity of playing fantasy football on line, and while we are using Yahoo’s fantasy football service we are to say the least, not anonymous to one another. I’ve always shied away from the trash talking and posturing of the typical fantasy football league message board, but I figure in this scenario there won’t be anyway to avoid it. I recall the first year I played in a league with someone I knew. I think the kindest thing said to me on the message board that year was, “Remember, Ed, in some cultures it’s perfectly acceptable for a man to cry like a bitch.” I was at the time in a nip and tuck struggle for last place in the league which I believe I won. I’ve already had one bit of luck. We drew names to set our draft order and I wound up with the first pick. They follow a slightly different setup than most leagues to try to offset the impact of the draft order. For some reason they pick 1-8 and then the second round picks 8-1, so the fellow that picks last by order actually gets two picks in a row which works out pretty well for him. I have a long wait in store after my first pick, but then I will also have two picks in a row. In some ways it is the hardest spot to pick from. I imagine I will do the obvious and take Peyton Manning. I have a fairly firm belief that he will not produce the same results this year as he did last year, but I can’t imagine not taking him. Peer pressure is a terrible thing.
