Dr. Z on T.O.
Dr. Z, Paul Zimmerman is one of my favorite sports columnists. Occasionally he lapses into shtick, but more often he offers an insider’s perspective on league matters that can’t be beat. In this article he makes some good points about the Terrell Owens contract situation with the Eagles before moving on to more general topics. Here is the first paragraph of that column:
“An NFL official told Eagles management not to cave in on Terrell Owens’ demands because it would send the wrong message to other clubs — namely that a guy can get what he wants by applying pressure and attempting to embarrass the team and its coaches.”
Something about that bothers me. For one thing it smacks of collusion. I’m not sure what business it is of the NFL how the Eagles handle their contract problems and I’m certain it doesn’t bode well for future contract talks between the players union and the NFL if this is an accurate gauge of how things are done in the NFL. I’m not sure Zimmerman realizes just what a little bombshell this could be if anybody in the press picks up on just how dirty it makes the league office look.
